Landscape of the Colombia’s current state in winter season

Colombia is suffering one of the worst natural disasters on account of the winter season. The constant rains that are falling in all the territory are causing numerous floods and landslides in most of its regions. This, in turn is leading to a massive emergency especially in those provinces which constitutes the Caribbean, Pacific and Andean region.

In the Caribbean region and maybe one of the most affected by this catastrophe, provinces such as Bolivar, Magdalena, Atlantico among others, are being damaged by the breaking of the dike’s channel, a large guiding structure designed to hold back the Magdalena’s river water. The collapse of this structure led to the flooding of hundred of farms, leaving thousands of homeless and displacing hundreds of poor families. The situation is not easy and to the havoc wrecked by this problem, is added the outbreak of some diseases such as malaria, dengue, diarrhea, etc, favored by the stanched waters.

In the pacific region, the province which is suffering most is Chocó. Due to its closeness to the Pacific Ocean and its characteristic of being one of the rainiest regions on the world, Chocó is living the consequences of a winter season without precedent in Colombia’s history.

In the Andean region, is presented a particular situation which contributes to make matters worse. It tunrs out to be that the range of mountains where is located this region makes easier that happens a disaster by the accumulation of water and the subsequent landslide that it produces fall down on to avenues, houses and even the people. One example of this, is what recently occurred in Bello, an Antioquia’s municipality placed in north of Medellin city.

It was 2 P.M on a shiny Sunday when a mountain’s huge chunk fell down onto a Bello’s neighborhood called “la Gabriela”. As a result of this tragedy, approximately 85 people died buried in the avalanche. As if that was not bad enough, several Antioquia’s municipalities are isolated from the rest of the province by the effects of numerous landslides presented across its roads.

Unfortunately, rains have not stopped and in order to face this situation Colombia’s president has announced crackdown aim at solving winter troubles. One of the most important measures was the possibility of creating a new tax encouraged by the outcome of disaster at a national level. However, constitutes a setback the fact of knowing that the Colombia’s economy has had a cutback in its incomes and therefore is unreasonable thinking about the creation of new taxes taking into account the country’s current situation. If it becomes true, it is expected a backlash in the most vulnerable sectors of the society. What is true is that today most than never emerge the need of helping those affected by the winter through massive campaigns carried out at a national, regional and local level to satisfy the main necessities of the population in need of housing, food, clothing, among other supplies.
